Mozambique Birding with Gary Rowan.
Mozambique tour - 3 days to 2 weeks
Mozambique currently has more than 600 recorded bird species. In a week you are bound to ID at hundreds of birds and hopefully including the Olive headed Weaver.
If you are looking for an amazing Mozambican birding adventure full of lifers, this is the place.Mozambique has the longest stretch of Indian Ocean coastline in Africa.
The inter tidal flats together with major lowland rivers, floodplains and abundant lakes and marshes that we call legoa's and are found inland and also in abundance just behind the ocean dunes are a magnet for waterbirds.
Some of the best preserved virgin forests are also incredible sighting areas to visit.
Day 1 we all meet at Casa De Cocos Lodge and Cabanas in Inhambane for self drive or at Inhambane Airport at 12h00 for fly in guests.
Afternoon viewing at the many legoa ponds for Allen’s (Lesser) Gallinule, Spurwinged goose, Pigmy Goose, Lesser Moorhen, Dickinson’s Kestrel, Collared Palm Thrush, Brown-headed Parrot at the many more at the lagoa's behind Coconut bay.
Day 2 is beach and bay day. A drive down all the beach and dune paths along sandy roads roads provides great and surprising good viewing.
Days 3 ,4, 5 is an excursion of your choice but a trip down to Panda is suggested. The road from Inharrime to Panda provides some excellent birding, passing through extensive grassy wetland areas, palm savanna and mixed acacia woodland.
The woodlands surrounding Panda and the Bobiane thickets, north of Massinga . This area boasts a most sought after Mozambique “specials” Olive headed weaver. The Bobiane Unguana thickets provide some of the richest bird habitats in Mozambique.
The area consists of coastal evergreen thickets, about five to six metres tall, with occasional taller emergent trees. Birding in and around Panda Mashona Hyliota, Pale Batis, Collared Pratincole, Black-eared Canary, White-breasted Cuckooshrike, Red-faced Crombeck & Stierling’s Wren Warbler can be seen.
Then it is back to South Africa with a bit of birding in the Kruger Park if required.
We will vary your package depending on your taste and requirements.
